ABU DHABI — The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has officially released its latest global statistics report, marking a monumental achievement. The global renewable energy power sector has recorded its fastest growth in history, driven by an unprecedented surge in annual capacity.

According to the official IRENA report, global renewable energy capacity additions reached a record high of 693 gigawatts (GW) for the year. This remarkable milestone pushed total global clean energy capacity to 5.2 terawatts (TW), now accounting for nearly 49.5% of the world's total electricity generation capacity.

Solar Power Emerges as the Primary Driver
This massive surge was dominated by two key pillars of energy transition technology: solar energy (solar PV) and wind energy. Solar energy led the way, contributing nearly three-quarters of all global renewable energy additions—recording a record increase of 510 GW in a single year—while wind energy followed with an addition of 159 GW.

IRENA identified economics as the primary driver behind this massive adoption of solar and wind technologies. Generation costs for solar and wind are now far more competitive and affordable than those for fossil fuels, making them a rational choice for many nations amidst global energy price volatility.

Regional Disparities and Bright Spots in Developing Nations
Despite record-breaking global growth, the IRENA report highlights persistent disparities in the regional distribution of capacity additions:

Three Global Giants: The vast majority of new capacity (approximately 79.5%, or 550 GW) remains concentrated in China, the United States, and the European Union. Africa: Demonstrated a positive trend with a record annual increase of 15.9%, reaching a total capacity of 82 GW, driven by Egypt, South Africa, and Ethiopia.

Middle East: Emerged as one of the regions with the highest annual percentage growth, surging by 28.9% led by Saudi Arabia’s ambitious goals.

The Urgency of Accelerating the Future
In his foreword, IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera emphasized that this report serves as a crucial benchmark for tracking the progress of the global transition. Although growth trends show a highly aggressive trajectory, the world still requires a massive acceleration in renewable power capacity and decentralized systems to achieve an inclusive, sustainable, and equitable future for all humanity.
