JAKARTA – The Indonesian government is now taking aggressive steps to accelerate the clean energy transition. President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the accelerated development of solar power plants (PLTS) with a total capacity target of 100 gigawatts (GW).

This instruction was announced by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, after a meeting at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday (April 21, 2026). Brian stated that the President is placing special emphasis on accelerating the replacement of diesel-powered power plants, which currently dominate in various regions.

"The President is paying close attention to ensuring this transition proceeds quickly, especially with regard to replacing diesel power plants. His directive is clear: the process must be accelerated," said Brian.

To achieve this ambitious target, the government has set an ambitious initial step for 2026: adding 17 GW of capacity. The strategy implemented includes two simultaneous steps: installing new PLTS and converting existing diesel-powered power plants (PLTD).

Brian explained that of the 17 GW target, approximately 10 GW is focused on reducing reliance on diesel power plants, while the remaining 7 GW will be the addition of new solar power plant capacity.

"We have conducted in-depth calculations with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, PLN, Danantara, and experts from universities. We are optimistic that this year's 17 GW target can be realized," he added.

Regarding technical aspects in the field, Brian emphasized that PT PLN (Persero) has been appointed as the primary driver in executing this strategic project. PLN has full control over determining construction locations and technical installations throughout Indonesia.

This step underscores Indonesia's commitment to weaning itself off fossil fuels and solidifies its position as a leader in the transformation of new and renewable energy in the region. (BPMI Setpres).
